SEQ Catchments welcomes the new Environmental Offsets Bill passed today in the Queensland Parliament.

SEQ Catchments CEO Simon Warner said the new legislation was a great leap forward.

“We have supported the bill all the way through and were in fact pressing for changes similar to this prior to the election of the current government,” he said.

“The new act provides for greater flexibility and clarity around how environmental offsets are applied in Queensland.

“We feel that the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection did an excellent job and consulted widely with industry and community to develop the bill.

“SEQ Catchments was happy to assist the Department and looks forward to participating in the implementation of the bill.
“We think the new offsets framework will provide opportunities to make a real difference for protection of the natural assets of South East Queensland.”

“Importantly, it is a break from the past system which was almost unworkable in South East Queensland,” Mr Warner said.

South East Queensland is one of one of the most species-rich and diverse parts of Australia, home to around 5,000 native plant species and 900 native animal species.

This rich diversity of natural resources both supports and competes with a broad range of land uses including agricultural, manufacturing, commercial and tourism enterprises.

SEQ Catchments is a community not-for-profit organisation focussed on the sustainable management of the natural environmental assets of South East Queensland and the attainment of the targets outlined in the SEQ Natural Resource Management Plan.
